Lectern made of lacquer and inlaid decoration of mother-of-pearl shell. This is a Japanese Namban lacquered piece, made in the second half of the 16th century. The word Namban makes reference to a group of works that reflect the mixture of techniques and materials from the East with Western furniture typology. The embrace of Christianity in the East produced very rich objects, like this piece, that presents a central decoration with the monograms of the Society of Jesus (IHS).
