Here, Philip the Handsome is depicted in armour, his sword lifted in his right hand, a sign of the supreme jurisdiction. He wears a crown and the necklace of the Order of the Golden Fleece rests on his ermine coat. He wears a tunic emblazoned with the coats of arms of Burgundy, Spain and Austria. Philip, son of Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian I of Hapsburg, was born in 1478. In 1496, he married Joanna of Castile, daughter of Ferdinand V of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. In 1504, upon the death of Isabella I of Castile, he claimed the throne of Spain (Henri Pauwels, in 'Musée d'Art Ancien. Oeuvres choisies' [Ancient Art Museum: Selected works])
