Legendary Dragon Flag

This ceremonial flag represents the royal authority, along with a tripod streamer made of oxtail or pheasant tail. It is also called by many different terms, including yonggi, yongdaegi, and hwangnyongdaegi.This flag was usually positioned in front of the king’s carriage, representing that the king led the overall procession. In the military practice, it was used to inform each garrison of the king’s arrival for inspection. Two dragons, ascending and descending, and cloud designs were painted on the jade-green silk square background, and the edge was decorated with red cloth, which represented flames. The importance of this ceremonial flag is evidenced by the act of an officer on a horseback holding the flagpole while the pole was also supported by four soldiers holding individual string connected to the pole.
