Sudjana Kerton (1922 - 1994) was born in Bandung, Indonesia and his work shows a deep concern for the common people, particularly the farmers, in his country. His works are exhibited in the Sono Budoyo Museum, Yogyakarta and other cities throughout Java. He left Indonesia after the war for studies in Holland and the United States, returning to Bandung after 20 years in New York. In 'Leisure Time', Sudjana depicts a group of idling men playing dominos. Huddled together, they share a casual camaraderie which extends its welcome to the collector of cigarette butts who has dropped by to take a nap, his collection by his foot. Deliberately simplified and distorted with comic effect. The line along the stretched body of the cigarette collector serves to complete the semi-circular huddle forming a tight composition that dominates the picture field.
