Museum of Natural History of Venice
Venice, Italy

The lesser red scorpionfish, common throughout the Mediterranean Sea, is an extremely mimetic fish that changes its color depending on the seabed on which it lies. Like all rockfish, it has a venom apparatus connected to the spines of the operculum and the dorsal fin: its venom is not extremely toxic, but its sting can still be quite painful. This scorpionfish has nocturnal habits and lives mostly motionless on rocky bottoms; it feeds on crustaceans and small fishes that catches, thanks to its unique camouflage ability, with ambush attacks.
