Textiles were highly prized and often left to relatives in wills or passed down through families. Silk was the most expensive fabric, particularly silk velvet. This purse is made from scraps of brocaded silk, possibly left over from the reshaping of a silk gown. Its design is typical of the 1730s but the purse was likely made a decade or two later.
