Between 1750 and 1800 fabrics featuring floral sprigs scattered across light coloured grounds came to replace the heavy floral patterns previously fashionable. Women’s gowns and petticoats in ‘paperweight’ silk were woven or embroidered in the new style, while men’s waistcoats were embroidered with colourful tambour work. The design on this purse exemplifies the new style and is probably homemade.
