Dear Mr. Portinari:
We hope that by this time you have recovered from your illness and are happily at work again.
It occurs to us that you might by now be in a position to do an illustration for us for the Container Corporation.
We would like to have a color sketch showing something typical of the life of the people of Brazil – workers around the docks – in the rubber plantations – or something of that nature. It might even be that you have on hand a sketch of this nature. It need not show the product of our client at all. We only desire to have your best work, and of course it is to your advantage too as it will be reproduced in the magazines which reach several million people.
We can offer $500.00 for this sketch.
Yours sincerely,
Charles T. Coiner
Vice-President in Charge of Art
