[inglês][datilografado] My dear Mr. Portinari : About a month ago the Museum os Modern Art telephoned me to inquire whether FORTUNE had any prior rights in the publication of your picture “Morro”. I told them that we had not, since we had purchased only reproduction rights on the two pictures which we published in the Brazil story. The other one, as you know, was accepted by the Museum of Modern Art for their exhibition “Art in our Time”. Subsequently an editor pf “Vogue Magazine” asked the Museum for permission to reproduce it in their publication. The Museum, knowing of your association with FORTUNE, then telephoned me to ask if you would have any objection to “Vogue’s” reproduction of this picture. After consideration I told them that I did not think you would, since it is much better to have one’s work seen as much as possible, and since publicity in a magazine of “Vogue’s” type is of the highest quality. Perhaps I was mistaken to tell them this, but I felt that it would be a good thing for you. I also told “Vogue” that as a matter of courtesy they should make a payment to you. This check was sent to me, and you will find it enclosed. I sincerely hope that all of this will meet with your approval and that I have not done a bad thing. Miss Florence Horn is away in the Philippine Islands, and I, therefore, did not have the opportunity to ask her advice.
