This photograph shows a letter to the College from the Rt. Hon Ramsay MacDonald, MP. James Ramsay MacDonald, FRS, (1866-1937) was a student at Birkbeck from 1886-87, studying science, botany, agriculture, mathematics, and physics. Later he went on to become British Prime Minister in the 1920s and 1930s and the first Labour Prime Minister.
