Handwritten letter from King Kalakaua to William L. Green, Minister of Foreign of Affairs, dated April 6th, 1881, Shanghai, China. The King writes of his travels from Nagasaki, Japan to China, visiting Tientien, Shanghai and Pekin (Peking) by Pan-Tah, or fast boat. In Pekin, he was unable to meet with the royal court as they were mourning the empress dowager of China. Instead, he met with Li Hung-Chang, Viceroy of Chilli (Chile).
