After the Diet of Worms, Luther wrote a letter to Emperor Charles V on his homeward journey, in which he once again explained why he could not revoke his writings. Although in the letter he expressly thanked the emperor for the escort he had received, the electoral secretary Spalatin did not find anyone to hand it over to the emperor.
