He responded to Frick's inquiry with great admiration. This resulted in the purchase by Frick from M. Knoedler, who had purchased it from the April 5, 1910 Yerkes sale.

April 23, 1910 My dear Mr Frick, I think I did not express my whole mind when you kindly asked my opinion of the Franz Hals, last evening - I will do so now: Outside the Rembrandt Portrait of his Mother in the Musee of Amsterdam, I do not know of a greater portrait of a Dutch Woman, than the one by Franz Hals from the Yerkes Sale - Yours [respectfully], Edward Brandus
