Lewis Marshall on the Selma to Montgomery March, Alabama

Included in The High’s exhibition "Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956–1968," this image captures the period’s spirit of determination. Lewis Marshall, nicknamed “Big June,” was fifteen years old when he marched as part of the student contingency in the Selma to Montgomery March for Voting Rights of 1965. Almost immediately after it was taken, this photograph became an icon of the civil rights movement—especially of the idealism and energy of the students who found themselves at its forefront. An active photojournalist, Karales was photographing for "LOOK" magazine at the time, and had three related series of works: The Martin Luther King series, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) series, and the Civil Rights series.
