Lex Gladiatoria

ca. 177 AD

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica
Santiponce, Spain

The text, engraved on a bronze plate, includes the central part of a senadoconsulto from the period when Emperor Marcus Aurelius ruled in Rome with his son Commodus, between 177 and 180 AD.

In this disposition, the emperor tries to cheapen the expenses occasioned in the municipalities as a result of the spectacles with gladiators, suppressing taxes and setting maximum prices, according to their category, to avoid the abuses committed by those who controlled them.

Discovered in the surroundings of city forum of Italica, Santiponce, in 1888.

Today, the original bronze is exhibited at Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid. In Italica's amphitheater is shown a replica.
