Church in Avvers-sur-Oise

Yuzo Saeki1924

Tottori, Japan

Made during the artist’s first stay in France, this work marks a transition from Cezannesque expressions of volume toward a unique, rather heavy touch. In the painting, Saeki pays homage to Van Gogh by depicting the church in Auvers-sur-Oise from the same angle as van Gogh had done in his painting. Another well-known episode took place here when Saeki met Vlaminck, and ended up receiving severe criticism regarding his work.
