The aim of the LHCb experiment is to record the decay of particles containing b and anti-b-quarks; collectively known as ‘B mesons’. The LHCb detector weighs 4,500 tonnes and is specifically designed to filter out these B mesons and the products of their decay that happens close to the beam pipe. Therefore, the LHCb detector stretches for about 20 metres along the beam pipe with its sub-detectors stacked behind each other like books on a shelf.
