Trade with Iran and even with Pakistan and India supplied all the raw materials that Mesopotamia lacked – stone, ores, wood. In Uruk, as well as in other places in southern Sumeria, these were turned into utensils, weapons and tools, but also the remarkable works of art found in the temple precinct. Exquisitely worked stone vessels with inlay patterns, probably used for drink offerings, have survived from this early period.
