Photograph of Lieutenant General Sir. Julian Byng with a French Officer in May, 1917. Sir Julian Hedworth George Byng (pictured left) was appointed to command the Canadian Expeditionary Force in May, 1916. Lieut. General Byng led the CEF in the capture of Vimy Ridge in April, 1917, earning him the promotion to Commander of the Third Army. Following the war, he would serve as Governor General of Canada from 1921-26.
