During the Edo Period (1603-1868), the shogun and daimyo (feudal warlords) practiced falconry to supplement their martial arts training and to display their power to the common people. This emaki, an illustrated narrative scroll, is the middle section of a three-scroll set. This section contains a large illustration without text and shows people hunting with dogs as well. Where and when this hunting took place, however, is unknown.
