The south pier at Newlyn was completed in 1887. It was extended in the early 20th century and included a new lighthouse. Beside the lighthouse a small, concrete building was constructed. This was a tidal observatory built to house tidal gauges to measure Mean Sea Level. Newlyn had been selected as one of three locations for a national tidal observatory to deliver the Second Geodetic Levelling for the Ordnance Survey.
