During the storms the Lighting Imager detects the electrical discharges between one cloud and another, and between the clouds and the ground. From 2017 it will be installed on the third generation satellites of the Meteosat program. Funded by ESA and EUMETSAT, these new satellites will be devoted to short-term weather forecasts and studies on climate change.
