Lion sculpture

-200/200

Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo

Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo
Linares (Jaén), Spain

The shape of this lion's head, askew, makes it possible to classify this piece within the set of lions considered ibero-Roman. This allocation is due to its approach to the Hellenistic sets, art gained considerable development in the Iberian Peninsula from the Roman conquest.

The function of this sculpture would be the protection of the deceased, over the graves of pioneer settlers from Italy in Upper Andalusia or fully Romanized Iberians in very early stages. The chronology that arises would be defined for the group of lions dated between the S. II B.C. and S. II A.D.
