Late 19th Century - First Half of the 20th Century

This space displays the furnishings used in the newly founded Ewha Haktang in 1886 (23 years since King Gojong took reign). After being stored in the president's office, a portrait of the first principal of Ewha Haktang, Mary F. Scranton, a Korean flag produced in the 1900s that was hung inside the Haktang, a copy of The Complete New Testament published in 1901 stained with the fingerprints of teachers, a certificate of promotion to the high school from 1915, a certificate of graduation from middle school from 1920, and a desk and chair used by Alice R. Appenzeller, the 6th principal of Ewha Haktang, was donated to the museum. Particularly, a bell with the date 1886 and an inscription describing its predicted use for calling students was inscribed in English. As the first womans institution, Ewha Haktang was the modern symbol of the changing of new ideals.
