Liza Grobler, No More Worlds to Conquer, installation view

Liza Grobler was Social Fabric artist-in-residence. We profile some of her other artworks. Pictured is a detail of an installation in Iziko South African National Gallery (part of Women's Work exhibition, Dec 2016 to Apr 2017). Liza's artworks are conceptual but informed by unusual use of materials and craft techniques. This work is constructed by crocheting ropes typically used in the mining industry, an industry that informs South Africa's colonial history particularly. The act of crocheting and the performance element of the work invokes labour. The title does not refer to the fact that we've conquered all, but that the quest for ownership should not be our ultimate goal. Among other questions, the artist asks: will future generations try to colonise other planets?
