A.C. Wyatt, artist. Watercolor. 1920. Loading schooner with pitch. Image: 20.5 x 14" Frame: 28" x 22". A barrel of asphalt being lowered into the hold of a large schooner. Trinidad began mining this naturally-occurring substance in 1867. As evidenced by this pair of paintings, schooners were being used to transport asphalt as late as 1920.
