Lobster pot

South Australian Maritime Museum

South Australian Maritime Museum
Port Adelaide, Australia

Lobster pot hand-made from cane bound and woven around a wire frame. This lobster pot is typical of those used in the southern rock lobster fishing industry (particularly in the state's South East) from the early twentieth century. There was initially little demand for rock lobster but now it is a lucrative industry with much produce exported overseas. The pot reveals the modest beginnings of the crayfishing industry in South Australia; these pots were often hand-made by the women of the small coastal towns. They were also used by recreational crayfishers.
