Location and direction of the main axis of the jet stream, a corridor of gale-like winds high in the atmosphere, are shown on typical days when the stream was studied in the region of Schenectady NY. The map was made by Dr. Vincent J. Schaefer, General Electric Research Laboratory scientist, using information obtained from official maps locating the presence of the high velocity stream. Dates when the jet stream appeared are shown on the map. Dr. Schaefer found that the presence of at least three of four typical clouds types indicates that the jet stream is overhead. He said tonight in a paper delivered before the American Meteorological Society that chains of weather stations across the country keep track of the movements of this important weather phenomenon by carefully-coordinated observation of such clouds clues.
