This piece may be considered as falling under the category of mourning or memorial jewellery, very popular in Great Britain during the 19th century, in which mourning the death of a loved one was shown by the use of a collection of clothes and their corresponding complimentary items. All of these had specific characteristics, the main one being the use of the black colour for the clothing and the use of specific materials, such as jet, ebonite or the hair of the dear departed. These objects were made by craftsmen who specialised in working with hair, such as the case of the French jeweller Lemonnier.
