"The Judge" was the principal competitor to "Puck" magazine and was founded by Joseph A. Wales, one of its former artists who reportedly had a disagreement with management. It followed basically the same format as its rival, with a color chromolithograph cover, centerfold, and rear page. It featured social and political comment and satire, generally supporting the Republican Party and its candidates. It was typically hostile in its early days to woman suffrage as seen in its many cartoons on the subject and its satire of Lockwood here.
