Why do we have past members of staff with names such as ‘Conqueror’, ‘Satisfaction;, and ‘Forget Me Not’? Because they were horses! In 1905, the London General Omnibus Company owned 17,384 horses. Why? To operate the network of 1,414 buses, all of which were horse drawn. This image form the Horse Book (a sort of register of the horses) can be studied to learn their various names, how much they were purchased for, and more.
