This photograph shows a page from the first Members' Register of the London Mechanics' Institute. Students paid an annual subscription in order to attend classes, which made them members of the institute with voting rights at its General Meetings. The third column in the register gives the students' professions. The Institute was open to men only until 1831, when women were also admitted. Students were also allowed to pay to attend individual lectures as an alternative to taking out membership. Reference: BBK 2/2/1
