Guan Yu was a renowned general in China’s Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD) known for his bravery, loyalty and integrity. He was deified after his death, worshipped as Lord Guan or Lord of Beautiful Beards by later generations of Chinese people. Adopting red as the main color, which signifies loyalty and integrity in facial make-ups of folk operas, this make-up aims to accentuate the valuable virtues of Lord Guan.
