Surya, the Sun God, has been worshipped in India from the early times. Surya is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Sun’. The Vedas refer to him and his various aspects as Savitr, Pusan, Bhaga etc. Surya also connotes the solar deity in Hinduism. The Vedas assert Surya to be the creator of the material universe (Prakriti). In the Vedic texts, Surya is one of the several trinities along with either Agni or Varuna and Vayu or Indra, which are presented as an equivalent icon and aspect of the Hindu metaphysical concept called the Brahman.
