Portrait of First Lady Lou Hoover painted by Richard M. Brown, after a 1932 likeness by Philip de László. Mrs. Hoover graduated from Stanford University in 1898 with a degree in geology, at a time when she was the only woman in the program. Mrs. Hoover was active with the Girl Scouts of America, serving as the national president from 1922-1925 and 1935-1937. Her husband, Herbert Hoover, was president from March 4, 1929 until March 4, 1933.
