Her hair is crimped in the style made popular by her rival, Mary Pickford. This portrait was taken to promote her movie While the Devil Laughs, in which Lovely played a hostess in a seamy New York café – a cover for a stolen goods operation run by 'fence' McGee. New York society magazine Vanity Fair reproduced autographed publicity shots for a growing number of movie fans.
