Lovesick Girl

Most of Steen’s paintings bear a moral meaning. The receptacle with the burning coal refers to the love of the girl, the open basket to the possibility that pregnancy is the cause of her sickness. The note on the table declares that no medicine can cure the lovesick. Maybe help is on its way – in the form of a postman.
