LU Yang was born in 1984 in Shanghai, China and received her MFA in New Media Art at the China Academy of Art in 2010. She currently splits her time between Beijing and Shanghai and has become an increasingly important figure in the field of new media and biological art.
Using a variety of media: video, installation, animation, photography and video games, the artist unflinchingly explores existential issues regarding the nature of life and where it resides. Armed with a overlaying mix of strategies taken from science, religion, psychology, neuroscience, medicine, games, pop culture and music, LU Yang explores the often delusional belief of creating her own cosmology. Highlighting the biological and material determinants of our condition, she reminds us of our transient and fragile existence but with an edge of dark humour that leaves no room for sentimentality.
Her works have been featured in significant solo and group exhibitions at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing, 2011), Reactivation -- Shanghai Biennale 2012 (Shanghai, 2012), Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2013), Musée d’art Contemporain of Lyon (Lyon, 2013), Momentum, CAC/Chronus Art Centre, (Berlin, 2014), Tampa Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg (Florida, 2014), The 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (Fukuoka, 2014), The IV International Biennale for Young Art (Moscow, 2014) and many more.
