"A well-educated artist who spent seven years studying in Rome, Knapton became keeper of the King's pictures in 1765. He is best remembered for his portraits of members of the Society of Dilettanti.
Little is known about the identity of the sitter, who seems to have come from the West Country. Painted in the 1740s, she wears a fine dress of Spitalfields silk, with an elaborate paste necklace. Her kerchief, edged with lace, and her apron add to the effect of expensive simplicity."
