George Daniell, a celebrated mid-twentieth-century photographer for Time and Life magazines, was born and raised in Yonkers not far from where the Hudson River Museum stands today. In the summer, many residents, from children to young adults, swam in the river currents, surrounded by railroad, shipping traffic, and the noise of nearby factories. After getting a degree in painting and photography from Yale University, Daniell returned to Yonkers and documented the urban riverbank he knew so well.
