Sixteen pieces of luggage, each owned by a notable personage of the mid-20th Century.
At lower left is composer and songwriter Cole Porter's brown canvas suitcase, edged in tan leather, with an embossed nameplate. Atop it is writer Art Buchwald's briefcase, with a sticker denoting his role on the press corp covering the 1960 Presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy. To the immediate right is a large blue trunk used for riding tack by William Steinkraus, captain of the United States Equestrian Team; the team's insignia is affixed to the trunk. Atop the trunk is a wooden carrier for a Yorkshire Terrier named "Freddy", owned by a "Mrs. Herbert Weston". Atop the dog carrier is Vogue Editor Candace Van Alen's brown leather suitcase, printed with her initials, and her monogram of a V superimposed on an A. Atop it is a small brown leather portable bar case owned by Vogue senior fashion editor Nicolas de Gunzberg; it is stamped with his initials. At top left is a small blue suitcase, covered in hotel baggage seals, owned by actor Marlene Dietrich. Next to it is a small Louis Vuitton bag stamped with Candace Van Alen's monogram. At center-top is a tiger skin covered suitcase owned by designer Joan "Tiger" Morse. Atop the blue trunk, to the right, is a large leather case owned by composer Leonard Bernstein. Atop it are (left) a red canvas wig box owned by socialite Rosita Winston; and (right) a pinstriped suitcase owned by Afdera Franchetti, actor Henry Fonda's fourth wife. Atop the red box is jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman's clarinet case. Balanced across the tiger-skin suitcase and pinstriped suitcase is a black leather "doctor's bag" owned by Vogue editor Catherine Murray di Montezemolo. On the floor, in front of the blue trunk, are a khaki typewriter case and leather briefcase owned by author John Gunther. In the lower right corner are a black leather covered octagonal Japanese wig box owned by operatic soprano Licia Albanese, and an alligator skin violin case owned by comedian and violinist Jack Benny.
