Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

Consciously following the example of Dürer’s master engraving of 1514, in his mirror-reversed copy Stuber adopts the parallels between Luther’s work as a translator and mediator of the Bible and the work of Saint Jerome. He gave the famous features of Martin Luther to the studying saint. Even the cardinal’s hat adorning the back wall is unchanged. The only thing that is missing is the sleeping dog of Dürer’s image.
