In April 1521 Luther was summoned by the emperor before the Diet in Worms. If he does not revoke his writings, the imperial ban is imposed on him. Luther explains in a world-famous speech: If I am not refuted by the Holy Scriptures or by clear rationales, I cannot revoke – my conscience forbids me to do so. Luther does not revoke.
