"Dziennik Narodowy" (eng. National Daily Paper) is a daily liberal-democratic journal of high editorial quality, founded soon after the censorship was lifted. It became a prominent exponent of the Polish national movement ideas.
Edited by Leon Korecki, who was employed at the Ossolineum as a scribe. It was printed in the Ossoliński National Institute during the eight turbulent months of the Spring of Nations, from 24 March to 12 October 1848, and was published in a total of 166 issues. From No. 16 (11 April) onwards, it served as the organ of the National Guard – the Polish armed formation commanded by officers from the November Rising period, Colonel Józef Załuski and then by Colonel Roman Wybranowski.
The daily mainly focused on a review of crucial “political events”, orders from the authorities, proclamations and manifestos. Analytical articles were published as columns reflecting the spirit of conservative-democratic thought. Given the pace of developments, however, the content of the magazine although by definition “devoted to political, historical and literary studies, both domestic and foreign”, was dominated by current reports from major European centres. Apart from Leon Korecki other Ossolinians, including August Bielowski, Karol Szajnocha and Wincenty Pol, also contributed to the high quality of this publication.
The journal, despite being available in numerous libraries, is in fact a rare title due to the great dispersion of copies, the stock of which is usually limited to sequences of issues. Text in Polish.
