Originally from the Middle East, a lyra is a string instrument similar to a lyre. At the beginning of the 2nd century BC, Asian nomads brought the instrument to Egypt, where it soon enjoyed great popularity. Whilst it is often depicted in musical groups on reliefs from tombs and temples, few original instruments still exist. This one was found in a tomb, where it was placed to entertain the deceased with music in the Netherworld.
