M Street High School was a preeminent institution for the black community of Washington, D. C. Both of Hamilton Sutton Smith's children, Julia and John Jay attended the school. The Cadet Corps, pictured here, was a precursor to the Junior ROTC and a source of community pride for the school from the 1880s to the end of the program in the mid-20th century.
