M107 175mm self-propelled gun

War Memorial of Korea

War Memorial of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This selfpropelled gun fielded by the US Army since 1962 is characterized by a 175mm artillery gun. An artillery gun has a longer barrel than ordinary guns, and the longer barrel makes for higher muzzle velocity, launching shells farther. This gives artillery guns a distinct advantage in attacking targets at long range.
The M107 175mm selfpropelled howitzer boasts a range of at least 30 kilometers even without using auxiliary rocketpropelled shells. The caliber of 175mm gave the M107 more firepower than conventional 155mm guns.
The M107 175mm was used in the Vietnam War and Middle Eastern wars. At the Battle of Khe Sanh, a fierce struggle between the US Marines and North Vietnamese Army, longrange artillery support from the M107 saved the lives of many US Marines.
The Korean Army was provided M107 175mm selfpropelled howitzers by the US from 1971 onwards as part of the Army equipment modernization plan. The howitzer was fielded for deep strikes against the enemy, and to provide corpslevel fire support. All M107s were retired by June 2005.
