Portrait of a seated man holding a cup

The painting represent a man with thick mustache and Turkish features, dressed in oriental style, holding a cup of coffee which probably comes from Middle East. The handleless container, used in Europe for both coffee and chocolate, was named "chicchera" (teacup, from "jícara") and was matched with the "mancerina", a small concave plate whose name comes from the first marquess of Mancera, don Pedro Álvarez de Toledo y Leiva, viceroy of Peru between 1638 and 1648. The painting shows how in the 18th century the trend for the consumption of new products was extremely widespread - so much to be the subject of genre and anecdotal pictures.
