Madonna and Child

The theme of the Madonna and child holds a place of its own within Jan van Scorel’s oeuvre. We know of a few basic types on which endless variations were created, both inside and outside Scorel’s workplace. Madonna and child was a great example for other painters. At least four other versions are known to exist. This painting is from Scorel’s Haarlem period (1527-1530).
