We know neither who commissioned this work by Marco d’Oggiono (Milan, c. 1465/70 – Milan or Oggiono, 1524), one of the leading Leonardesque painters in Lombardy, nor its original location.The figures emerge from a uniform black background. The pale flesh tones of the Child contrast with the warm colours of the
Virgin’s apparel, the red of the tunic and the orange of the mantle being separated by the aquamarine of the overgarments. Mary wears a transparent veil with subtle gleams of gold to suggest exquisite embroidery
